One of the things that Brooklyn is famous for is the fact that so many films have been shot on location in our borough. If you’ve been on our Pizza Tour then you know that we love to take you off the beaten path to see those actual movie locations. That’s not the only tour that we do that includes movie locations. From romantic comedies to Oscar winning performances, we’ll also take you to see some of your favorite movie locations on our Best of Brooklyn Tour.
Moonstruck tells the story of Loretta Castorini, from Brooklyn Heights, who falls in love with her fiance’s brother played by Nicholas Cage. Moonstruck proves that anything can happen when there’s a full moon over Brooklyn. You’ll stroll the same streets as Cher on the tour and then pause in front of the house used in the movie as seen here.
The Hotel St. George, also in Brooklyn Heights, was the largest hotel in New York City during the 1930s with over 2,300 rooms. It featured the largest indoor salt water pool which attracted locals and celebrities alike. Every famous big band of the 1930s and 40s played in its ballroom and the bar in the hotel is where they shot the scene in The Godfather when Luca Brasi gets whacked. We’ll take you there as well!
As Good as It Gets
As Good As It Gets was released in December of 1997! Helen Hunt’s character, Carol, lives in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood just off Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. You’ll see two scenes from this movie on the tour: when Helen Hunt and her Mom walk into Farrell’s, a favorite Brooklyn bar since the 1930’s, and this crazy scene when they try and hail a cab on Prospect Park West in front of Ballard Pharmacy.
Dog Day Afternoon
Dog Day Afternoon was released on September 21, 1975. It was based on a real life bank robbery that took place in the Gravesend section Brooklyn on August 22, 1972. Rumor has it that John Wojtowicz, who was portrayed by Al Pacino in the film, watched ‘”The Godfather” right before attempting to rob the bank! Ironically, we feature movie locations from both The Godfather AND Dog Day Afternoon on our Best of Brooklyn Tour!
