If there’s one thing New York City knows, it’s pizza. Pizza is part of our culture and part of our identity. And if you’ve never had authentic Brooklyn pizza, well, your life is incomplete!

Don’t know how to eat pizza? Brooklynites will teach you (never with a fork or knife by the way)! And we will set you straight that a piece is called a slice and an entire pizza is called a pie.

This list only scratches the surface, but here are a few of our favorite old school pizzerias to prove Brooklyn has the best pizza on the planet.

L&B Spumoni Gardens

The Sicilian Square at L&B is arguably the best pizza in the world. If you’ve never been to the Brooklyn landmark in Bensonhurst, you’re seriously missing out.

Pro tip: Brooklynite Danny Boy O’Connor from the legendary hip hop group House of Pain says, “Get a corner slice”.

Grimaldi’s

If you come to legendary Grimaldi’s under the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait. But the coal-fired brick oven pie is absolutely worth it.

Don’t expect to get a slice at Grimaldi’s, as their famous sign reads,

“NO SLICES. CASH ONLY.”

JV Slice Brooklyn

J & V

J &V has been serving up real Brooklyn pizza since 1950. They were the first place in the Italian neighborhood of Bensonhurst to sell pizza by the slice.

Da Vinci

Da Vinci is truly one of Brooklyn’s tastiest original spots. Brooklynite Leah Remini even brought her daughter to the Bensonhurst pizzeria to teach her how to properly eat a slice (folded, of course).

Lenny’s

You know Lenny’s in Bensonhurst even if you don’t think you know Lenny’s. Lenny’s is the pizza John Travolta was eating when he taught all of America about eating two slices together, double decker style, while strutting his stuff in Saturday Night Fever.

Pizza Wagon

Not all slices are created equal and Pizza Wagon in Bay Ridge proves it. The recipe hasn’t changed since 1966 and it doesn’t have to. It’s to die for.

Di Fara

Dominico DeMarco is as famous as the pie itself. He’s been making them since 1964 at the Di Fara in the Midwood section of Brooklyn.

The New York Times called it, “one of the most acclaimed and sought after pizza shops in New York City” and that’s true. You’ll wait over an hour for a slice and it’s worth it.

It’s even Brooklynite, magician David Blaine’s favorite.
